Sonic 2000
Updates

8/26/99
  • New Beta Now Up - You can grab the new beta from the download section of the site. The biggest bug fix is a file naming bug which only allowed the game to run on Marc's machine. Enjoy!

    7/8/99
  • Visual Basic 6 extensions (MSVBVM60.DLL) added to Download Section - If you were getting a "MSVBVM60.DLL file not found" error, rejoice! I added the Visual Basic Virtual Machine DirectX extensions to the download section of the site. I think Mark is coding the game is Visual Basic. As far as I know, DirectX 7 will have direct visual basic support, so this bug not appear on machines with thw latest version of DirectX. However, in the meantime, the file is now online. (It was a bitch trying to find it on Microsoft's website.)

    7/8/99
  • File Fixed - I screwed up and the file got currupt. I reuploaded it. It should work now.

    7/7/99
  • Very Beta 3D-Version Avalible for Download and Game News - Since Psyco is not longer co-operating, the game has to be redone from scratch. :-( Mark has sent me an early alpha 3D demo version of his rework at the game. This is not the full version of the game, nor is it related to the screenshots posted last month. It's just an early start are recoding the game. I figure the game is going to be setback heavily because of this. (Where the hell are you Psyco??)

Anyhow, you can grab the demo off the Download section of the site.

    6/13/99
  • New Screen Shots Posted - Marc has sent me some interesting screenshots from the new Direct-3D version of the game. These images are really neat and gives new life to this 2 year old project! I have no info about from where within the game there were made, or even if they were made directly from a running version of the game or not. (One of them has severial Sonic images floating around.) I posted a few GIf versions of the images on the site, but I decided to post the rest of them in their original BMP format. (JPG and GIf compression hurts the quality of these images, and servers them no justice.)

Also, I noticed that in the image named "Claws," there is an charactor who looks alot like Tails, but more like a tiger, then a fox. Was there a story change? I don't know. Mark said he will give me the load down on the current state of the game as it is apperent that the information on this site is EXTREMELY outdated. I'll post the info as soon as I get it. You can grab the screen shots from the Sneak Preview section of this site.

  • MIDI Files Links Fixed and a New One Added - I fixed the links to the MIDI files on the Sneak Preview section of the site. Appearently, GeoCities deleted them. Also, I posted a new MIDI file that Mark has created entitled "Little Fleet???". I'm not sure if that is the correct name, but I added it never the less.

    4/1/99
  • Sonic 2000 Direct3d Rewrite - No, this is not an April fool's joke. Mark has informed me that he will be canning his currently "QBasic" 3D engine for a Direct3d version. What this will mean, obviously, is much better 3D graphical performance from the game. (I.E., hardware based 3-D polygon drawing exceeding the 400 or so polygons a sec that the current engine puts out.)
Mark is also working on a new MIDI for the game. Will we release it when its ready? Possibly, if your good.

    2/14/99
  • We moved! - We have moved to our new home on the Emulation Zone server! Our new address is: http://www.emulationzone.org/projects/s2000
(Please update your bookmarks!) This new location will finally give us plenty of leg room to stretch-out.

    2/07/99
  • Bug Squashed! - I finally got rid of an annoying bug in the Credits Page applet. The email address was not moving to the correct place on my base "opening" effect driver I wrote for the applet. It has been fixed. I also gave it a slight speed-up for Netscape 3.0 users be eliminating some needless outputs to the console which was used by myself for debug purposes.

    1/15/99
  • Happy Birthday, Mark - Today is Mark's birthday! Send him your regards!
  • Sonic HQ Interview - Zifie of Sonic HQ has told me that they are interested in conducting an interview with the Sonic 2000 staff sometime in the next month or two. The reseaon for the delay is because they are behind in backlog on the site, and they have severial other people already inlined-up. We'll keep you as posted, as always! Their site is located at http://www.emulationzone.org/sonichq.

    1/04/99
  • cncs.dll - By popular demand, cncs.dll is now avalible online if for some reason your installation of Sonic 2000 does not install cncs.dll. You can grab the file from the "tech help" section of the page.
  • 3-D Engine ScreenShot - Mark has released yet another series of screenshots showing a rendering of an object using the 3-d engine. Due to a bug, he only has images of straight objects, no polygons. :-( Check out the screenshot in Sneak Preview Section.

    12/04/98
  • "Sonic 2k Online" back online! - I finally got a chance to check and fix the link to the files required by "Sonic 2k Online. Apperently, I had the filename's casing incorrect. (sigh)
  • Sonic 2k local download up and running! - I uploaded the archive of the Sonic 2k program to the local server. The link is backup and ready for business once again!

    11/10/98
  • Eliminator Attacks? - If you havn't already noticed, someone (or something) is causing chaos on the message board and calling themself "Eliminator". I'm not sure if he/she/it is the real McCoy or not, but whoever it is, go away!
  • Game Status Update - Straight from Mark: "I fixed (almost) the 3d engine in Sonic 2000. I need to make some money, so I'll be working on something else, too."
  • Eliminator is Hired? According to MArk. " Eliminator is working FOR me now. Don't worry, I'm in contact with "his" staff, and nothing goes through him. Plus he's not getting anything from me this time." To recall, Eliminator made severial deal with Mark where he never fullfilled his end. He ever gave Mark midi files and called them his own, even though they were the works of someone else. We all hate him for being a ripoff and a phoney.
  • The Great Gleen Apes - Just curious, did anyone dress up like an ape when John Glenn returned to earth?

    10/2/98
  • Email Change - I chnaged my email address back to wacko@vgernet.net
  • Game Update - Mark has some good news and bad news to annouce:
Good news: I resumed work on Sonic 2000
Bad news: I have been unsucsesful in fixing the 3d engine.
Good news: Psycho sent an other screen shot.
Bad news: He had a computer virus that erased everything except for that one, which he had backed up.

    9/12/98
  • Credits page applet fixed! - I finally went after that credits page applet in hopes to solving a bug on why the images were not loading. It's fixed now! The problem was the filenames for the files were in UPPERCASE! They need to be in lower case.
I also removed a line of code that made a number appear in the upper right hand corner of the applet. Though not too important, it was there as a "debug" aid, since my debuger doesn't want to work like it should.

    8/30/98
  • Sonic 2000 DOS WINDOWS version avalible for download - Once again, the DOS WINDOWS version of Sonic 2000 is available for download off the download section of the page. The game is stored locally on the vgernet.net server, so the link to download it should always be available. (As long as I don't mess up the link to the file!)

    8/14/98 (Busy day!)
  • DRAKKON Software Productions is merging with Sonic Team Jr. - I got the word from Mark that Sonic Team Jr., another small software team like DRAKKON, will be merging with DRAKKON! What does this mean? Well, the merger of talent and resources! I don't have the specifics, but from I gather, Stealth, the programmer from Sonic Team Jr., will be reprogramming the 3-d engine Mark has been working on into C++ code. Mark will also have access to a C++ based program engine geared for side-scrollers like Sonic the Hedgehog. What does this all mean? Well, if the programming for the core of the engine was designed with speed in mind, we could be looking at lower system requirements! But, this could also end further develpoment of the online version of Sonic 2000.
Klick-and-play, the program that Sonic 2000 is being written under, has a nice little feature. This little feature can convert the executable game created into a game that can run on the net via a plugin written by the company. If click-and-play is no longer use, they say bye-bye to further Sonic 2000 online updates.)
So where do I stand? I will remain at my current role as webmaster, and also become treasurer. (And why not? I was the treasurer for my old college's engineering club, but this won't be the same.)
  • HAW Productions Returns (Part II) - I received a higher quality image of that animation cell from Mark. It can be found in the Sneak Preview Section page under Sprites. Again, I will create a whole separite section for these cells on that page as soon as more cells come in.
  • Nick Bradach Uncensored - Appearently, I have a bug in the Java applet. For some reason, Nick Bradach's image and name does not show-up on the credits applet, but his title does. I think this is a mere file name problem on the server, because the applet works fine on my end. I will look into this.
  • Sonic 2000 avaliable for download soon - If things go well, Sonic 2000 should once again be avaliable for download this Saturday! Stay tuned!
  • Our on Domain Name! - (Sort of) If you are on the road and you forgot the URL to this page, just remeber sonic2000.cjb.net. This address will point you to http://www.vgernet.net/wacko/sonic/s2000/s2000.htm (Something that only I know by heart!)
    8/08/98
  • HAW Productions Returns - After offically losing all hope that HAW productions would actually create an opening animation for the game, they finally pulled through and released one animation cell! The cell is now avalible on the Sneak Preview page under Sprites. I will create a whole separite section for these cells on that page as soon as more cells come in.

    7/28/98
  • Sonic Online Online Page Update - The Sonic 2000 ONLINE has been updated! The page has more technical info then before to help you get started. I also have a newer way of accessing the game online. Thanks to everyone in the message board for the suggestions!

    7/19/98
  • Sonic Online Online - Sonic 2000 ONLINE is now up! Be sure to install teh Vitilize plug-in first!

    7/17/98
  • Update and Clairification - Sonic 2000 ONLINE will be up in a few days, even though the links to it are up.

    7/11/98
  • Hell No, We Won't Go! - As many of you have become aware by reading our message board, Elimanator made a very folish attack on our page that could of begun the end of this and ALL Sonic the HEdgehog related webpages on the web. Mark got a phone call from SEGA whose name was Ira, saying that they got a complaint from Elimanator (Jason) asking for us to take down the page on grounds that the images of Sonic on our page are illegal. REally? Copyright law actually allows us to create and post our OWN images of Sonic on the web, as long as they are not from copyrighted images. So eat that SEGA! There are MANY other reason that support our arguement. Read the messages in the news group for a good idea on what we mean.

What I find humorous from all of this is that Sega called Mark, no me. "I", Andy Wolan, is the host of Sonic 2000, and the webpage clearly mentions, "Comments and questions related to webpage are asked to be directed to the webmaster. Direct these comments to Andy at wacko@javanet.com. PLEASE DO NOT SEND WEBPAGE QUESTION AND COMMENTS TO MARK!" Either the guys at SEGA are blind or never actually looked at this page before bothing us.
As for our final comments on this issue: Sonic 2000 will continue and the webpage will remain until we get written paper work from SEGA explicitly asking us to take down this page.
  • Applet Update - Now back to business! The "credits" applet is now up. It can be located in the Game info& FAQ section of the page. Please note that this applet may not work right for users of Netscape. This has nothing to do with my style of coding, but more with the poor development of Java classes within Netscape. I will try to make a work around to allow users using the version of Netscape with a version number of 3.x in it, NOT Netscape Communicator 4.0+. For Communicator uses, please download the latest verion of Netscape Communicator: it includes the lastest Java classes within the browser.
  • Old news moved - All old news from this page has been removed from this page and placed in the "old news section" below.
  • Online version of Sonic 2000 - Beleive it or not, Mark found a little program that will convert Sonic 2000 into an online version that can be played over the web. This is not as practical as just downloading it and installing it on your home system, but it's cool when your at a remote location looking for a quick game of Sonic.

    6/30/98(PM)
  • NOT Moving - I'm glad I did not write down what I was going to write down last morning. It appears the Eliminator is a cheat and an a$$hole to the end! We were SUPPOST to move the site to http://www.graphix-sounds.com/, a site that was going to be payed for by Emilinator; the same guy that claims to write original MIDI files. Anyhow, this same jurky just changed the password to access the FTP site to upload files to right after Mark had just finsihed some early HTML work on the site. To make things worst, Eliminator now claims sole position of the page with "Super Jay". (Whoever he is.)
  • Eliminator Must Pay - ...and in cash, not plastic. (hehe) Anyhow, we must teach this jerk a lesson. What I want everyone to do is for everyone to write (or flood) Eliminator an(many) e-mail messages stating what a fraud he is and that we will make the internet community aware of what a phony he is and have people BOYCOTT his business! Eliminator's email address is 3_23@hotmail.com! Happy flooding. (Oh, and Mr. Eliminator, go ahead and try to flood me! I got me a nice Unix shell where I can write a nice little script to erase your any and allyour counter attacks in seconds! Not to mention a a T1 line to attack from...)
  • And while you are doing that... MIDI files #4, #5 and (gulp) #6 are being removed. (Sorry, Mark, it's for the better.)
  • And finally... - I received some more sprite sheets. I will be posting them pending Mark's approval.
  • Page "Addition" - I made the Message Board "standard equipment" on the little red link bar at the bottom of each page.

    6/30/98(AM)
  • Moving - We will be moving to a new server soon. More info about this later when I have time to type it out.

    6/25/98
  • New addition to the Staff! - Directly from Mark, here's the latest word on this: "I added a new person to the Sonic 2000 team a few days ago. He's called R. Sarkis. He's part of the planning and developement team." Welcome to the team, R. Sarkis!
  • MIDI Mayham! - Unfortunatly, it would seem that our new MIDI composor is a fake! Early investigation have shown that the MIDI files he submitted are actually someone elses work. Apperently, the files are kept the same with just the MIDI instrumentation altered to make it sound idfferent from the original. This information is NOT 100% offical, but I'll let you know when I learn more about this incident.
  • New image added to Sneak Preview section. - I just added the Rotor sprite sheet to the Sneak preview page. Check it out!
  • Error in FAQ's fixed! - I fixed a linking bug to the FAQ section of this page for Netscape users. Bug is now fixed! Thank larnor for spotting it!
  • Psss.. - Don't let Mark know I told you this! Mark is (or was) hard at work adding in a neat "easter egg" into the game. I won't say much about what it is, but I will say that it has something to do with Monty Phython...

    6/21/98
  • Main Page Speed-Up! - The main page loads slowly under internet explorer 4.0, even on a t3 connection! Reason? Unspecified image width and hright in my HTML code. I added the appropriate code.
  • Update on Credits Page - Ok, feedback on request for a image of or mention to represent each person involved with the project is trickling in. To those that havn't responded, PLEASE RESPOND SOON! I'm going to write a Java Applet to doing some cool graphical stuff to introduce each person on the team, and I need at least a handfull of images to begin. Please note, I WILL accept submittions of those that are beta testers.
  • Added MIDI #6 - Midi #6 has been added. According to Mark, it's entitled Sonic 3000 Theme. Uhhh Mark, what are you doing?

    6/15/98
Ok, I'm back from my little vacation to do some updates. 4 things to report:
    1. Mark will now post all news pertaining to the development of the game on the message board. The message board will be updated DAILY!!!
    2. Some new midi music might be added shortly to the page.
    3. Sonic 2000: the commerical. A company is willing to create a free, made to order commerical advertising the game! More news on this later.
    4. And to all people involved with the development of the game, please forward a picture to of yourself of an image to represnt yourself. I will be creating a credits page listing all the people involved with the Sonic 2000 game. A picture of every would really spice-up the page.
    5/25/98
  • Busy week! - Well, what a week! I reorganized everything! Now that everything is just about all set, I'm going to take a break from this page for awhile to work on my Emulator Page. I'll return to this page for updates in about 2 weeks. Chow!
  • Message Board Returns! - I created a new message board. It's fully operational once again!

    5/23/98
  • Changes 90% complete - All new modification are just about complete. Now, I must create the Tech help page.
  • More Midi's! - Elimanator(E14), the new guy to job the team, who will be helping Mark in the creation of new midis will not be around for 3 weeks. But, Elimanator(E14) didi leave us 2 new midi files with will be used in the game! They can be found in the Sneak Preview section of the page.
  • More Layout changes - After many hours of planning and many ideas at looking at many ideas, the following work has/will be done to the page:
The download section of the page is now up! I hope everyone finds it informative and somewhat useful. The chat page is going to be eliminated because hardly anyone uses it. The Story Line and Game Play sections will be absorbed into a new version of the FAQ and Game info section called "Game Info & FAQ's". (Creative eh?)

    5/21/98
  • Layout changes coming - I'm not planing on any major changes, just a simplification on where info in stored and where, like merging similar page with similar topics.
  • Big screw-up - I have been feeling ill lately and I totally neglected to do a check on the new file system I created to store files on the site worked fine remotely. (It worked fine locally.) As a result, images are not being displayed, links are broken, and Mark and yelling at me to fix it all up imediately! :-) I will be working on this current situation and the one mentioned above in unison when I start to feel better.

    5/18/98
  • Blurbs - Mark has mentioned blurbs to me about someone named Elimanator(E14) who will be joining him to help create MIDI music for the game. (Click here to download a sample of this person's tallent) and some word about starting work on a 3-D engine. A screen shot of the 3-D engine at work is avalible by clicking here. (Note: the screen shot does not show the 3-D graphics with textures, and it is not a screen shot of the game. It was meant to bluntly show the currect progress of the 3-D engine.)

    5/11/98
  • Mark continues project - After taking a month or so off with the beta release ofe Sonic 2000, Mark has informed me that he is back on the job coding the game!
  • Home made Java Applet updated! - Instead of larger and width scrolling image, I replaced it with a thin but long image. Again, your comments about it are welcomed.

    4/24/98
  • Home made Java Applet added! - A cool Java applet has been added to the storyline page. Your comments about it are welcomed. Oh, by the way, if your browser does not handle Java, don't sweat it. I wrote the HTML file so that it will display the graphic image of the graphics used in the applet.

    4/10/98
  • Beta Realease Bugs - There are a few major bugs in the game. The game does not bring you to start correctly when you perish. You have to go back to file/newgame/ and then file/password/"aaa" to restart the level. Unfortunatly, that triggers a serious bug that crashes the entire game. (stack overflow I believe.) Anyhow, Mark emailed me saying he doesn't like the way the game looks and will be redoing most of it.
  • More Headaches - The Xoom.com site is a very bad site to store a 3.5 meg file. We will more likely be moving that files to a faster server soon.
